Jill Thompson,
a graduate of The American Academy of Art in downtown Chicago, has
spent all of her adult life and most of her youth drawing comics,
having worked as a professional since the ripe old age of fifteen.
Over the years Ms. Thompson has garnered critical acclaim on titles
including Wonder Woman, The Sandman, Swamp Thing, The Invisibles
and The Dreaming, but it is her current project, Scary Godmother,
a comic storybook, that may be her most exciting to date. Created
solely by Ms. Thompson, Scary Godmother is the story of Hannah Marie,
a little girl who meets her Scary Godmother while exploring a haunted
house one special Halloween night. "I've had the honor of working
with some of comics' most talented writers on some of comics' greatest
characters," says Ms. Thompson. "But I can honestly say that creating
my own book and my own characters has been one of the most exhilarating
experiences I've ever had. What I've tried to do with Scary Godmother
is create a children's story that parents would enjoy as much as
their kids, and tell it in a medium I really, really love--comics--while
making it more accessible to a mainstream audience. I think in comics
we've been trying to get the mainstream--a non-comics--culture to
notice us, and the way we do things. Well, maybe if we applied our
knowledge to what's familiar to everybody, we can get their attention."
This delightful tale is a fully painted comic that weaves elements
of children's book story telling and traditional comic books. It
is scheduled to be published this fall by Sirius Entertainment,
a recognized leader in all-ages, family-oriented comics.
